Assimilation of DoD Sensor Data Into Operational Forecast Models
نویسنده
چکیده
Remotely-sensed observations from satellites hold great promise for providing a wealth of hightemporal and spatial resolution data, particularly over the oceans. However, it has been very difficult for numerical weather prediction systems to show consistent, positive forecast improvement attributable to satellite retrievals obtained in the conventional manner. By developing techniques for the direct assimilation of the satellite measured radiances, this project will lay the foundation for improved threeand four-dimensional data assimilation systems for global and mesoscale applications. These systems may be run at operational central-site forecast centers or run on-scene to provide operational mission support.

متن کاملImproving Regional Forecast by Assimilating Atmospheric InfraRed Sounder (AIRS) Profiles into WRF model
The use of state-of-the-art hyperspectral sensors--such as the Atmospheric InfraRed Sounder (AIRS) on NASA’s polar-orbiting Aqua satellite--to retrieve high vertical resolution thermodynamic profiles and their subsequent assimilation into forecast models holds promise in improving weather predictions. This improved vertical resolution over previous capabilities results from the use of thousands...
متن کاملDevelopment of an Operational Multi-sensor and Multi-channel Aerosol Assimilation Package Using NAAPS and NAVDAS
Accurate prediction of regional and global scale aerosol phenomena is crtical to military operations, especially over regions of interests such as Middle East. For this reason, the US Navy developed the first operational global aerosol model in the world. Yet the forecast accuracy is limited by lack of observations over ocean and other data-poor areas. The long-term goal of this study is to imp...
متن کاملAssimilation of the seabird and ship drift data in the north-eastern sea of Japan into an operational ocean nowcast/forecast system
At the present time, ocean current is being operationally monitored mainly by combined use of numerical ocean nowcast/forecast models and satellite remote sensing data. Improvement in the accuracy of the ocean current nowcast/forecast requires additional measurements with higher spatial and temporal resolution as expected from the current observation network. Here we show feasibility of assimil...
متن کاملDesign of Field Experiments for Adaptive Sampling of the Ocean with Autonomous Vehicles
Due to the highly non-linear and dynamical nature of oceanic phenomena, the predictive capability of various ocean models depends on the availability of operational data. A practical method to improve the accuracy of the ocean forecast is to use a data assimilation methodology to combine in-situ measured and remotely acquired data with numerical forecast models of the physical environment. Auto...
